BEN MURNANE: So tell me about some of the offers that you launched at this event—or can we reveal them at this stage?
LIEF SIMON: We can talk about them a little bit. Well, one thing we’ve been working on for years with our contacts around the world is trying to get more, easier, faster, better access to foreclosures in various countries.
And one of the real estate agents we work with here in Panama has now a direct link to one of the banks and their foreclosure list. And so that is exciting for our real estate investors. They can come in, take a look and see, and get a big discount off the top because the bank just wants their money back, they’re not necessarily selling at the current values.
BEN MURNANE: Right. And you also mentioned a couple of other things that are new?
LIEF SIMON: One is a soft launch, pre-launch of a Live And Invest Overseas’ real estate fund. I was approached a few months ago by a group that’s interested in putting together a real estate fund and having me act as one of the investment finders.
We’ve had readers for years asking us, “Why don’t you just put a real estate fund together? That way I don’t have to decide between all the properties that you’re finding and telling us about. And I can’t afford to buy all of them anyway, so I can be diversified within a fund if you put it together.”
The problem with the fund for me is administration, paperwork, and I don’t have time for that. So this group is doing that side of it and will be helping with the administration and all of the SEC requirements.
It will only be available to accredited investors, but it’s a good first step into having something where our readers can be diversified across a wide range of real estate around the world, with a single investment.
BEN MURNANE: We also had someone speaking from an Irish investment group…
LIEF SIMON: Right. So this is not someone you’re going to find in the Yellow Pages. They don’t advertise. And so through our network, we have this new real estate opportunity for people where they can invest directly with this group, where again, they wouldn’t have been able to find them on their own.
BEN MURNANE: And that’s an opportunity for up to 100% profit through the Irish market and they do some investments in the U.S. as well.
So we’re offering all these different things. And it’s really another reason to come to an event—because you hear about it before anyone else.
LIEF SIMON: And you get to speak with the principals involved. So the principal from the Irish investment group was here and anybody in the room could have a direct conversation with him. The real estate agent with the foreclosures did a great presentation and you can take a look at the list of foreclosures directly at his table and see if there’s any properties you’re interested in viewing while you’re here.
BEN MURNANE: And, you know, so much more commerce, so much more relationship building happens when you’re on the ground. That’s always reinforced for me at these events.
But it’s not just external opportunities, if I can put it that way. You also relaunched the Live And Invest Overseas Private Network service at this event.
LIEF SIMON: We did. And that is something we started back in, I guess, late 2018 because our first trip with that group was in 2019 and then the pandemic hit. So we kind of wrapped that up. Being able to travel—that’s a big part of the Private Network. Taking interesting and unique trips that Kathleen and I take with our friends and network. And so we’re inviting readers to join that group.
We’ve relaunched that at this event and had a couple people sign up already. The idea there is that you’re part of our network, you have access to these opportunities that we brought to this conference, but you would have heard about them firsthand as they came across our desk rather than waiting for an event, if you were part of the Private Network.
With Private Network membership you can travel, again, with us and our Private Network people on at least one trip a year that we’re trying to take—something fun and unique. The next trip is meant to be our second part of our Silk Road tour in Uzbekistan. The first part was in 2019 and Private Network members at the time were invited to come along and a few did.
As Kathleen would say, these are “trip of a lifetime” opportunities. In some cases, I do the work, I find the tour company and put everything together. In other cases, we just all go. We’ve been to the running of the Palio di Siena and in that case we booked our own hotels, organized tickets, and all met there and had a good time.
BEN MURNANE: It’s sort of the most unique travel service that you could ever think of. Readers also get access to your own personal properties…
LIEF SIMON: Right. We include two nights a year in any one of our available rental properties. Right now, we have a house in Los Islotes in Panama, it’s up for sale, but available for someone to spend time in at the moment. And our apartment in Medellin, Colombia is still available. Coming online next year will be our property in northern Cyprus that we bought last year. It’s under construction. Our inventory is always changing, there’s always something new.
